This week a couple of year 3 children attended an Able Maths Day at St Mary’s School, Crowborough. It was run by Peter Hall author or Author Abroad and Professor of Caboodle Books, an ex-headmaster who is a maths specialist. The children who attended were chosen for their natural enthusiasm and ability in Maths.
They said, “We learned new calculator games which we really want to share with our class. We had a range of shapes and we had to try and make triangles, oblongs and other shapes. We had to make a circle out of diamonds. It was really difficult until they showed the solution on the board.”
The children spent the whole day focussing on Maths, allowing them longer to think deeply about the Maths challenges they were set. They were challenged with maths puzzles for Y6 children and really responded to and enjoyed the opportunity to explore different solutions and calculation methods.
At the end of the day the children said, “It was epic and we would love to go there again – it was so awesome. I hope when the Maple kids get older they will be able to go too, although when I was in Maple I wasn’t very good at Maths.”
