At St Mary’s, we teach the National Curriculum through whole school learning journeys. These are introduced to the whole school at the start of each seasonal (big) term and built on through the questions children ask, the specific topics relevant to each year group and the outcomes of each individual. We use a stunning start to introduce the learning, a marvellous middle to touch base mid way on new learning and a fantastic finish to celebrate the completed journey.
We plan our curriculum in three phases:
Foundation Stage: Maple Class
Key Stage One: Cherry Class (Year 1 / 2)
Key Stage Two: Larch Class (Year 3) and Willow Class (Year 4) bought together for afternoons as Silver Birch
Lilac Class (Y5 / 6)
The experiences our children have, through community and partnership projects, trips out and guest speakers, enrich and broaden their learning. At the start of each seasonal term, parents receive an overview called the Curriculum Update outlining the key learning. Once learning is underway, the work of pupils is celebrated in assemblies, on the website and in the school newsletters, Their enjoyment and enthusiasm is evident in all they do.
All children are taught the compulsory subjects of the National Curriculum. The class teacher focuses on the requirements for English and Mathematics in the mornings whilst the afternoons are dedicated to Science, History, Geography, Computing, Art and Design, Music, RE and Design Technology on a two yearly rolling programme. Weekly, French and PE sessions are taught by specialists in the school.
CURRICULUM UPDATES for 2017-2018
To ensure fluent readers with exceptional comprehension, we follow ‘Letters and Sounds’ for phonics, our reading scheme is an amalgamation of different books, all colour coded according to the ‘Reading Bands’ book and we enhance understanding with weekly foci on the different AFs.
To ensure grammatically sound writers, we use grammar progression.
To ensure enquiring, problem solving and confident mathematicians, we have a clear and concise calculation policy and termly overview.
