The Wider Curriculum
Children learn so much by seeing and doing. The hands-on, practical learning opportunities are the ones that create memorable learning experiences. Visiting places of interest or having visitors into the school greatly enhance this.
We often use the local area, taking children along the forest Way or onto Ashdown Forest. We also venture further a field such as to Herstmonceux Science Centre (or have them visit us!), London and Chatham Docks.
A highlight for years 5&6 is their residential visit; here five days are spent away with their friends, and they experience and attempt challenges and outdoor adventurous sports such as climbing, canoeing and abseiling.
PE & The Arts
Excellent facilities exist for a wide range of physical activities. The hall is well equipped for physical education; there is a full size netball court in the grounds and the nearby village playing fields are used for football and other sports needing a broad green expanse. We are fortunate to have a professional sports coach (Mr Paul Dolton) who teaches all the children from Y1-6 for at least one PE session per week. He also runs some popular before and after school clubs for the children. The school regularly competes against other local schools in a wide variety of sporting competitions.
Art, music and drama play an important part in school life. All children will take part in at least two productions during their school life at St Mary’s. At present all children from Year 3 to 6 receive some musical instrument tuition in addition to class music lessons. The school is keen to encourage music experiences and we enjoy planning a music concert in the summer term and taking part in Christmas concerts too.
